Hi Ms. Cubitt
I just wanted to say that you must be an excellent teacher. I was just looking at your blog, and I think that your students are so lucky to have you. I can't wait until my son is old enough to go to Ernestown. Keep up the great work! M. B.
Ms. Qbit I would also like to commend you on your blog idea. I have enjoyed it as much as my daughter has. It was an excellent way to get the kids involved. I am so glad my daughter was in your class this year. d. edwards
My name is mzqbit and welcome to my media blog. When I am not being a teacher, I try to be as human as possible, and I do this in several different ways. First of all, I wasn’t always a teacher …
When I was in high school things were more or less the same as they are now except that I had an extra year with OAC. Music was a very important part of my identity. My favourite bands in high school were REM, The Cranberries, Live, The Tragically Hip, Moist, Nirvana, Green Day, Counting Crows, The Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer. I loved to listen to Sarah McLauchlin and Radiohead whenever I was feeling weepy and emotional, and Nine Inch Nails if I was angry with my parents.
As for computers, I remember getting the Internet when I was in OAC. I thought it was amazing that you could talk to people in other countries. My school didn’t have Internet - we really did have to look things up in BOOKS. There was no “googling” and I only remember handing in one or two major assignments typed up on the computer. I never used the Internet for research (no wikipedia either - we had to use real encyclopedias!) and there was no such thing as a blog, or an iPod! Also, teenagers didn't have cell phones. In that respect, high school was quite different for me!
I hope you enjoy the class. My advice is to keep your mind, eyes and ears open. We will look at a lot of topics, since the media touches our lives in so many different ways. My goal is to make you question what you see in the media, look beyond the surface and arrive at your own conclusions. Good luck and have fun!
